IRT N - Well, its going fairly cheap thesedays, so it might be worth my while.
Currently digging my teeth into the sidequests of FFVI, as well as fishing in Dark Chronicle. Also occasionally setting up my Xbox for bouts of Halo with my friends.

Well, what i've seen this far about FFIX is good enough for me to play it. The feeling is really nice! though, i've found a somewhat problematic zone ^^U can't pass through it... damm it XD
I'm playing AGAIN (and AGAIN XD) QUAKE 1, and i still am amazed of the HUGE AMOUNT of effort ID software put in it, Software ZBUFFER, MIP MAPPING, and Lighting effects in only 256 colours! impressive, intelligent, and really worked. and it ran smooth in a PENTIUM class processor at 133 MHZ!
I guess programmers nowadays won't work the same hard for a game again, a pity =.=

The lighting effect in Quake rocked. As far as I remember it's an awesome shading model, as the dynamic lights cast not even Goraud, but something closer to Phong shading (and scenery lights are precalculated as low-res grayscale textures). However, you can play Dreamcast Quake or GLQuake nowadays, which is hardware accelerated and provides texture filtering and HiColor.

I wonder why programmers nowadays doesn't work the same hard. Even ID soft only relies on computational power instead of optimization. Maybe Half Life 2 is worked enough? (haven't seen it)

That's the problem with PC games. Nobody gives a shit, and if they can save a week and make some engine twice as slow, they do. Then if the game runs poorly, they just are "ha ha man your computer sux upgrade upgrade upgrade". Since you can, they don't bother optimizing. When you can't, as in consoles, things are better. See how well worked are the current PS2 games, they even look good, which is an amazing achievement in that platform.

Heh... I guess that's what Final Fantasy programmers think, i still can believe that amount of textures and video effects can be done in a PS2 so fast. (God Bless FrameBuffer Access! XD)
